Duncan Purdie - Goalkeeper

Veteran goalkeeper who has a long playing history in both the Saturday and Sunday amateur leagues. Privious clubs include Dumfries FC Colts and Bellevue Rovers wher he was player manager. Prior to that Duncan played for Lorburn Thistle in the Sunday League for many years. Duncan is a key member of the Maxwelltown Thistle playing staff. Duncan is a good communicator and a safe pair of hands.Duncan has an excellent record in one on one situations. Duncan is currently appealing an SAFA ban and may be suspended for the whole or some of the 08-09 season.

Gavin Hughes - Goalkeeper

Gavin joined Max from the YMCA, where he had been for several years. Gavin can play outfield if required. The possible suspension of Duncan Purdie could be the big man's opportunity to establish himself as No.1 this season. In pre-season games he has looked sharp and everyone is confident that he can produce consistent displays through the season.

Bruce McQuarrie - Defender

Bruce is the best header of a ball in the squad and he uses this ability to the maximum whilst playing at centre half. A good player on the ground as well as in the air, Bruce weighs in with his fair share of goals each season. This year he will have help defensively with fellow centre half Tommy Jardine avialable from the start of the season. Sheba is a solid club man and can always be relied on.

Craig Stewart - Defender/Midfielder

Craig only played in a few games last season due to family commitments. This season he is back raring to go. Craig is an experienced player who is very consistent in his performances and someone who can play in a number of positions so keeping a place may be easier for him than for some of the other defenders.

Tommy Jardie - Defender

Previously with Bellevue Rovers, Tommy is known as one of the best defenders in the league and definitely improved the team when he returned from injury late last season. Tommy is another reliable player who gives a consistent performance every time.

Ryan Warwick - Defender

Ryan has had an impressive first season in the league, starting nearly 25 games. Although he lost his place to Tommy Jardine near the end of last season he is back raring to go again this season. Always gives a 100%.

Davie Gauld -  Midfielder

Davie has been back with the team for 3 seasons now after a break of several years out of the game. It took him a while to get up to speed and as a result he has not always been a first choice player. However, Davie does put in some excellent performances (and some not so good) and his strength and physical presence are always a bonus in certain games. This pre-season he has worked hard and will figure in team selections throughout the season.

Scott Learmont - Midfielder

A soccer legend the Sweatdog is an enigma. On his game he is absolutely brilliant. He may be leaving for a while soon for a year of skiving in the far east. In the meantime it is his ambition to progress in the Burns Cup and score in the final.

 

Nickname: Sweaty.

 

Johnny Banford - Midfielder

Johnny is one of the 3 gingers and always punches above his weight. Sometimes forced to play in either of the wide midfield positions due to the competition for positions inside, Johnny never fails to deliver. A key player for next season. The wee man is a tireless worker and one of the most reliable members of the squad.

 

Nickname: The Ginger Salmon

 

Stuart Wight - Midfielder

Stuart is a tireless worker is a very tough customer on the park. Never gives up and is strong in the tackle and good in the air. Occasionally tries to do too much but Stuart is a powerful player who can keep the opposing midfield quiet during any match. The change of formation this year may enable Stuart to get forward a bit more.

Graham Anderson - Midfielder

Graham is a veteran player who is now on the wrong side of 40. Extremely fit for his age he still puts everything he has into a game. The quality of the younger players may mean Graham has had a a bit part role for the last couple of seasons but whenever he is called upon Graham never lets the team down for effort. Provides an example to younger players.

 

Nickname: Gazza or Bones.

 

Mark Montgomery - Midfielder/Forward

Mark is an experienced player who never lets the team down, can be equally effective up front if called upon. Mark is very competetive and can handle the physical stuff, he weighs in with his fair share of goals as well. Needs to improve discipline a little as he was missed bigtime in the games missed last year due to suspension  Penalty taker.

 

Nickname: Charlie or Cha

 

Lee Nish - Forward

Lee has just moved up from Youth Football and is a regular at the training sessions. Lee has shown a willingness to use his pace in the training games. Will find is hard to get into the team but will benefit from the training. Lee will provide an option up front if he progresses as expected. Missed most of last season due to toe injury.

Ross Halliday - Midfielder/Forward

Club Captain. Ross is one of the best players in the entire league and can turn any game when he is on form. Struggles sometimes with injuries due the type of player he is but he has explosive power and terrific pace. An injury sustained in the British Legion cup final curtailed  his effectiveness at  the end of the season. Available at the start of the season this year, Ross will be looking to make an impact as soon as possible.


Nickname: Butcher or Rosco.

 

Graeme Carling  - Forward

Graeme was top scorer last season with 29 goals after a slow start. This season Graeme has hit the ground running and if he keeps up the form that he is showing during pre-season he will trouble every defence in the league. The big Geordie is a massive favourite at the club and gives the team a focal point in most matches. Good in the air and sharp in and around the box he has very few weaknesses.

Sean Kearney  - Forward

 

 

 

Sean has signed again after joining near the end of last season. Sean is an intelligent player and will bring something different to the team when he plays. Sean can also graft with the best of them and has a keen eye for a goal. When the games are tight Sean can make a difference.

Craig Lavan - Forward

Last season was Craig’s best season in amateur football, scoring over 25 goals and creating just as many. He is very lively and has lots of pace. His size means that he can never dominate a game physically but his sharpness and eye for goal mean that he will be a threat to any team. Ended last season on a high, hopefully Craig can keep his form going and maintain the progress he has shown recently.

Jordan Docherty - Utility

Jordan seems to have been around for years and yet he is only 17. Jordan never misses a Saturday or training and is a big asset to the club. He has provided cover throughout the last three seasons and although he has not had much playing time has never given up. This pre-season he has fitted in in a defensive role with some success and can look forward to more appearances this year.

Murray McLelland - Forward

New to amateur football in the area Murray has joined the club in time for the new season. He lacks match fitness and is working hard to get fit. In training he has shown some nice touches and it won't be long before he is pushing for a starting place.

James Smith - Midfielder

James is an experienced midfield player who was often a thorn in Max Thistle's side when he starred for Lochar Thistle. He has joined Mx this season and will certainly improve the team in an area where there is already a lot of strength. Jamesey is a top player at this level and will help the push for the title this season.

Steven Walker - Forward

Big Steve has finally joined Thistle. The big forward adds a different type of player the the forward options and his experience will certainly be valuable in the tighter games. Still coming back from injury hopefully Max will get the best of him once he is fully fit. A massive signing.

 

Nickname: Hightower.

Chris Craik - Sweeper

Chris is an experience player who has joined from South team Heston Rovers. Chris has starred in this league for several teams including Lochar Thistle, Bellevue and the YMCA. Having played mainly as a goalscoring centre forward. Chris has moved back to a defensive role recently and has shown he can be a top player in this position as well. If necessary he can move up front late in matches and will cause plenty of problems for the opposition in that role.

Charlie Lavan - Midfielder/Defender

Charlie has joined the club from St Cuthberts and brings yet more experience to the squad. He is a left sided player with planty of pace who will bring balance to the team.

Kieren Smith - Midfielder

Kieren is a young player who has signed this year from Lochar Thistle. He can play on either side, has a good engine and will provide competition for a place in the wide midfield areas.

David Todd - Utility

David is a big lad who has been out of football for a few years and is now looking to get back in. He works weekends so will only figure in midweek matches. David will provide physical presence when required.

 

Nickname: Dangerous.

 

Ross Paterson - midfielder

Ross is a young player who has joined this season from the youth league. Ross is keen and has plenty of energy and will improve as the season goes on.

Martin Thomson - Assistant Manager

Martin is a vastly experienced player who has played at amateur, junior and senior levels of the game. Martin rarely plays nowadays but always puts in a good show when called upon.

Stevie Todd - Manager

Big Toddy has been around the amateur game for many years. He has managed several other league teams including Loreburn Star, Max High FP Ams, Kirkton, Loreburn, Dumfries FC Colts before re-forming Maxwelltown Thistle last season. With over 400 games as a manager in the league including a spell as League Select manager he has plenty of experience. He combines his club role with that of League Secretary and is committed to the amateur game in the region.
